A small bundle!

Today God blessed our lives with a precious little bundle of joy! Poppy Josephine was born this morning, weighing 6 lbs. 8 oz. She is our fourth grandchild. This afternoon her mommy dressed her in her first outfit, a little yellow skirt and lavender top. We had to pull the blankets off for a minute and take a peek! She, her parents and sisters are doing very well!

Banana Blondie Bars

I tried a new recipe recently and they turned out so good! Here are the instructions:

Banana Blondie Bars

1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup mashed bananas (2 large)
3 1/2 oz. coconut
1 1/4 cup flour

Cream together butter, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla. Add baking powder and salt. Mix well. Blend in bananas, 3/4 cup of the coconut; mix well. Blend in flour. Put in greased 13x9-inch pan. Mix remainder of coconut with 1 TBSP sugar and 1 TBSP melted butter. Spoon evenly over top. Bake at 325 F degrees for 45 minutes, or until golden. Cut into bars after cooled.

*I didn't add sugar into the topping, because I was using sweetened coconut and it was plenty sweet already.

ENJOY!

Baby Hummer

Last evening while my dh and I were sitting out on the patio enjoying the breeze, I kept hearing this very high-pitched 'cheep'. It did not sound like any of the familiar bird calls that I am so used to hearing around our place. Suddenly the sound was closer and I turned in my chair to find this little hummingbird sitting on the chain link dog fence across from us. It appeared to be a young one and was making this desperate little call that I've never heard from a hummingbird before. It was something more like a 'regular' bird would make. Within the next hour, this little one flew around the house twice, only about a foot above the ground. Twice it came to some geraniums in a pot by my dh, and sat on the edge of the pot for a few seconds. Another time it landed on a bag of potting soil I had sitting on the front porch, and just sat there. A nearby cat took advantage of the situation and caught it. I dashed over there, sweet-talked the kitty long enough for it to hold still, pryed her mouth open and off flew the little hummer! I do believe it was learning to fly. It had quite an adventure in that hour, for sure!

Shadows

These pretty shadows caught my eye yesterday morning as the sun poured in through the kitchen window.

Gift from afar

Our middle daughter is expecting her third child any day now, another precious little girl. Today I received a surprise in the mail from my dear friend in England, whom I've exchanged letters with since we were 12 years old. She knitted this beautiful sweater for the baby. Isn't it gorgeous? What a sweet gift!

Pink clouds and kitties

Last evening I noticed the sky was full of pink clouds as the sun was setting. I took the camera, went to the sloping back field behind our house and sat down on the ground to soak in the view and take some photos. Before long, three of our many cats (Cookie, Scamp, and Blacky) came along and sat down in front of me. They looked out the direction I was looking, and then Scamp turned around as if to say to me "What is it we are looking at?"

Blogger won't let me type a title in for this post. Dot (of Strolling Through Georgia) mentioned the same thing in her blog today. Hopefully it will be fixed by tomorrow!

Afternoon planting

Yesterday I went to buy catfood, and came home with a cart load of flowers, pots, soil, and new pruning shears. One of our cats (Cookie) is sniffing all the new purchases.

The bench was moved from the front porch, to the side, a much more perfect place for it. Now I can sit and look at the rock garden flowers, watch the hummingbirds and keep a much-needed eye on the garden fairies! I saw a little leaf or something on the bench after everything was planted and in place, and walked over to remove it, and it was a guest sitting on the bench!

Mr. Grasshopper came by for a rest!

This is my first time planting Coleus. This one is called Magella Purple Perilla, and I planted a Raspberry Swirl impatiens with it.

Here is the other one, called Kong Red, and also planted with the pink impatiens like the other one.

Here is the view from the driveway. Would you like to come and sit for a while and have a glass of something cold to drink?

A day of play!

My 4th of July, yesterday, was a very unusual day for a holiday. I played all day! My dh had to work, my son and grandson were playing games and my oldest daughter (who lives with us at present) was watching movies. I went up into my craft cottage (a room above our garage recently fixed up just for me!), and did I ever have fun! I spent the entire day sewing (other than one break for a little lunch). I can't even think when the last time I had a 'me' day was. I feel so refreshed now! :o)

First I experimented with a hanky folding it this way and that, and finally came up with a little design I liked. I sewed it together and put a button on the front (for decoration only). It might be nice to tuck in a drawer with little keepsakes in it.

Next, I made one of my tote bags, only this time I hand-stitched a little heart on the outside with some of the same fabric the lining is made out of. I've made these bags before, but the difference with this one (besides the heart), is I made it out of woven cotton dish towels. I have the biggest box of them you can imagine (different colors) that I had for my business. I'm so glad I found a use for them aside from giving them away as towels, which I will do. Let the fun begin!

The other reason it was an unusual 4th of July, is this is the first time in 30+ years we have not done fireworks! Our grandchildren were with their families and our son wasn't too interested, so we had a relaxing and quiet evening. I rather liked it!

She has arrived!

Miss Sweet Pea Faery has arrived all the way from Canada! Recently, my name was drawn for one of three faery winnings over at Pea's Corner! I won the little green (my favorite color!) faery and Pea was so thoughtful to add in the loveliest little rose floating candles and a sweet note, all included in a pretty purple keepsake box!

Blossom and Lilac welcome Sweet Pea, asking her questions about where she came from and telling her what it will be like to live here. They already have adventures in the making!

The Forest Princess Fairy welcomes her, and two owls have come by to see what all of the excitement is about!

Thank you, Pea!! What lovely things you sent! I will treasure them always and of course, will think of you daily when I look at little Sweet Pea and the other wonderful gifts! You are a dear!

*Note: Sweet Pea Faery will be spelled the way her clan spells it. The ones from here are spelled fairy.

A sun-bathed morning & fairies!

On this glorious morning bathed in sunshine, I discovered one of my hollyhocks blooming. The original seeds were some I had ordered from Tasha Tudor's plants years ago through the mail. There are two colors - a bright pink, and this one shown, a soft dusty pink.

My hydrangea is showing color! I moved it not too long ago, so am pleased to see it made the transition just fine.

As I walked by the rock garden, I was just sure I heard a giggle and a hush. I saw my three fairy children in their usual places.

Someone trying to hide some giggles behind the violet leaves.

Yawn and stretch. "I didn't see anything, I've been dozing in the sun."

"I've just been playing my mouth harp, minding my own business."

The fairy princess holding her skirt up to catch morning dew drops for making sweet water tea, just smiles and says: "Fairy children will be fairy children."

I just know they all had something to do with the little new foxglove arrival (seen at the right in the photo). I think the mystery is solved, though my fairy friends will never admit to planting it! They do love a good surprise laced with a little 'prank'.

Who am I?

I discovered this little pretty while watering the flower bed this afternoon. It was partly hidden under one of my azalea bushes. I took a close-up photo of if in hopes that some of you may be able to help me identify it. It looks like a foxglove to me, but I haven't been able to have any here due to one of my dogs forever digging up any I have ever tried to grow. It's been a few years since I had one. Whatever it is, I love it!! Any thoughts? I'm wondering if the fairies planted it, as I have four fairy friends living in this flower bed.

The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady - July

As promised each month, here are a few pages for the month of July in 'The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady'. Edith Holden was such a gifted artist and naturalist! I never grow weary of looking at her work and reading her notes. The following poem is the one shown with the top picture.

'Then the green rushes - O so glossy green,
The rushes they would whisper, rustle, shake,
And forth on floating guaze, no jewelled queen,
So rich, the green-eyed dragon-flies would break
And hover on the flowers - aerial things;
With little rainblows flickering on their wings.'
